Details of Wyatt's life are sketchy. He was born in Granville County, NC. Some believe his father was Robert Hester but evidence is lacking. Leaving North Carolina, Wyatt moved to Greene County Georgia in about 1808 and served in the War of 1812 out of Greene County. He went to work in Hardeman County, Tennessee, for Dr. Wiley Jones as a stable hand and driver, eventually marrying his daughter Elizabeth Branch Jones on December 04, 1823. They moved to Benton County, Arkansas in 1830, settling just above Springville near the town of Lowell where he purchased 80 acres. They raised the rest of their family on this plot, eventually accumulating about 320 acres through purchase and a bounty land grant for service during the War of 1812.
There is little documented evidence of their lifestyle there, and it is assumed they lived an uneventful farmer existence until his death in 1853. Following his death, Robert Fulton Hester left for California, where he married, raised a small family, and died there in 1898. Wiley Jones Hester moved to Missouri, just across the Benton County line, marrying Elizabeth Gass, and starting a family before moving to Grayson County Texas in 1859. Martha Jane Hester married James Lindley, and lived near the family home.
The Civil War brought many changes to the Hester family. Smith Alexander Hester and Thomas Benton Hester both joined the Southern cause, serving the in the Arkansas Volunteers. Raids from the Yankees at the Pea Ridge Government Installation harassed surrounding settlers, especially those with relatives in the southern service. Elizabeth Hester gathered her family, a few friends and relatives, and moved in 1863 to Grayson County, Texas, living with her son Wiley Jones Hester until land could be obtained in Hill County. Smith Alexander Hester and Thomas Benton Hester took leaves from the service to help move the family, and Smith died in route back to Texas after bringing a second load of farming machinery as far as the Red River in Oklahoma. The family continued on to Grayson County, living there until about 1865.
Wiley Jones Hester and Thomas Benton Hester purchased a large Hill County farm in partnership in 1865. That land is now part of the Hill County Junior College Experimental Farm. Thomas Benton Hester married Cherokee King, raised a large family, living in Comanche and Eastland Counties, Texas. Martha Jane Hester Lindley had lost her husband in the Civil War, and remarried ? Whitmire in Texas. After his death, she lived with her brothers and sisters until her death in Sherman in 1914. Mollie, Mary Elizabeth Hester, began teaching at a rural school in Western Hill County, eventually marrying Dr. John Howard Walling, a local widower with three small children. They moved to Fischer County in 1888, ranching and farming until their deaths. He died in 1916 and she in 1919
Elizabeth, the Mother, lived with her daughter Sarah Frances Hester. Sarah married Henry Ward Harris in 1869, and lived in Hill and Bosque Counties until about 1890. Elizabeth died in Bosque County in 1878, and is buried in Prairie Valley Cemetery near the small town of Whitney in Hill County, Texas.
Wiley Jones Hester moved first to Salado, then Sterling County, then back to Goldthwaite, Texas, where he died in 1894 in Caradan, where he is buried on the Kellogg Ranch. Following his death most of his family including his wife Elizabeth left Texas for Oklahoma settling in Carter County near the town of Wilson. Many of them are buried in Bomar Point Cemetery there.
Details and most of the writing of this brief sketch are the work of cousin Earl Hester to whom I am in great debt.jd
