Last Sunday morning little Leroy, son of Mr. and Mrs. William Meldrem, was burned to death at their home in south Brooklyn. About 9:30 o'clock Mrs. Meldrem left Leroy and a little babe in the house for a moment, while she went to the barn to get a bucket. She was not gone from the house more than two minutes until she heard the child scream, and running to discover the cause she found Leroy enveloped in flames. Desperate effort was put forth to stay the fire, but when the work was accomplished the little fellow as found badly burned.
With great haste Dr. C. D. Busby was called, but no human aid or skill could alleviate the suffering or restore the agonizing child, and at 12:30 o'clock death relieved his little body from torture.
Leroy was born Sept. 3, 1896, and was two years, three months and 15 days old, a bright and promising child. It is a sad, sad blow to the loving parents, and the sympathies of the entire community go out to the grief stricken ones in their hour of sore bereavement.
Funeral services were held in the south side church Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock, Rev. A. V. Kendrick expending the words of consolation to the sorrowing relatives and friends, and the remains were sadly born to I.O.O.F. cemetery, and laid to rest. A very large concourse of relatives, neighbors and friends were in attendance at the funeral and burial, testifying how deeply they mourned with the sorrowing ones.
