Publisher. Presidential Advisor. Herman Kohlsaat was born and raised in Ohio. He started his working career in Chicago as a newspaper carrier and then went into the food business, eventually owning a number of lunch counters and bakeries. In 1893 he left the food industry to enter the newspaper field. At various times he owned and edited the Chicago Times-Herald, the Chicago Record Herald, and the Chicago Evening Post. He was never interested in public office, but was an informal advisor to presidents from McKinley to Coolidge. He died at the home of then-Secretary of Commerce Herbert Hoover. President Coolidge and other government dignitaries attended his funeral.
