After her husband died on 3-4 June 1864 from pneumonia symptoms at US General Hospital #3 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Elizabeth continued caring for her children herself, remaining in Big Creek Twp. & Cedar Twp. It took her several years to obtain the Widow's Military Pension she was entitled to. According to descendants, this was due to confusion as to which "James Baldwin" that died at the hospital was actually her husband. She and son, George eventually moved in with her son-in-law & daughter, David & Amelia Hubbard, where she remained for a very short time, just before her death in August 1880. She was buried in her family's plot, near her infant grandson Harry R. Baldwin.
