Deaths in Dubuqueland
Manchester - Joseph H. Rhines, 77, a resident of Clayton and Delaware Counties for 62 years, died at his home here Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock after an illness of three years. For two years he had been bedfast.
Funeral services, in charge of the Rev. J. Frank Moore, pastor of the Manchester Community Church, will be held at the family home Thursday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Burial will be in Asbury Cemetery, norwest of Wood Center, in Clayton County.
The oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Rhines, he was born in Augusta, Maine, April 17, 1858. He remained there until he was 15 years old when the family settled on a farm three miles northeast of Edgewood. He lived there until his marriage Jan. 14, 1880, to Miss Julliette Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Duncan of Edgwood. They bought a farm four miles northeast of Edgewood where they lived until 1907, when Mr. Rhines bought a farm bought a farm one-half mile northwest of Manchester, where he lived for three years.
Mrs. Rhines' death occurred April 12, 1912. Five daughters born to them died of diphtheria at a tender age.
Mr. Rhines was married at Manchester in 1917 to Mrs. Minnie Van Anda and the home had since been made in Manchester.
Surviving are the widow; six brothers and sisters; Mrs. Evelyn Morrow of Dacomah, Okla.; Frank Rhines of Lanont; Mrs. L.W. Burgin of Strawberry Point; Charles Rhines of Lima, Ia.; Mrs. Sylvester J. Phelps of Manchesterl Lewis Rhines of Merrill, Wis.
One brother, John, died 11 months ago while one sister, Mrs. U. Burgin of Edgewood, died 10 years ago.
Surviving also are three step-daughters, Mrs. Charles Kay of Anaomsa; Mrs. Clyde Johnson and Mrs. Harold B. Jones, both of this city.
