The Chico Enterprise, Chico, CA, January 26, 1918: Aged Pioneer Passed Away Today. John Wesley Summers, a resident of Chico for the last twenty years, died this morning at the Landis sanitarium in Chico Vecino.
Summers was 85 years of age, a native of Illinois and came to California 35 years ago, later settling in Butte County. He was a Civil War veteran.
Surviving are two sons, James Summers, Cariao, Wis., and Charles Summers of Dorris, Cal., and two daughters, Mrs. Carrie Benner of Chico and Mrs. Mary Elliott of Skowhegen, Maine. He has numerous grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held from the Engel chapel Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. J. Sherrill of the United Brethren church will officiate and burial will be made in the Chico cemetery.
