William Pinkney Boatright was born in 1857 in the Zion Hill Community a few miles northwest of Farmerville, Union Parish Louisiana, the son of James Boatright and Jane Elizabeth Stiles. When Will was only four years of age, war engulfed the country and deprived him of many of his male relatives. He lost his father, four uncles, older brother, and a least one first cousin in the conflict. His father's death in November 1862 left his mother with a farm to manage and household of young children to raise. Although Will's grandfather, Powhatan Boatright and older brother, John Nolan Boatright, provided assistance, Will grew up in extremely difficult financial circumstances.

On 7 April 1884, Will married Mary T. Anna Ham, the daughter of Captain Hillory Herbert Ham and Samantha Elvyann Scarborough. They eked out a meager living as sharecroppers until 1896. The drought of 1896-1897 caused the Boatrights to suffer from both famine and financial devastation. Two successive years of crop failures caused Will to seek a better life elsewhere. They moved to the Town of Hamburg, in Ashley County Arkansas during the winter of 1897-1898, where he obtained employment at a sawmill and as a night watchman. Between December 1900 and February 1901, the family suffered from a malady that turned into pneumonia for both Will and Anna. Anna Ham Boatright died on 13 December 1900 and Will Boatright on 8 February 1901.
