A BUILDER OF THE OLD MICHIGAN ROAD
James Andrew, Jr. was one of the founding fathers of LaPorte, Indiana. He and his brother Captain Abram Piatt Andrew (1792-1872) built the first section of the old Michigan Road in 1830 starting in Madison, Indiana at mile marker 0. The Andrew brothers bid $498.27 per mile to construct the first fifteen-mile segment of the road leading northward from Madison and were awarded the contract. Completing this strip of road in less than a year, the brothers proceeded to Indianapolis to collect the $7500 due them, only to find that the Michigan Road Authority could not pay them in gold and silver coin. Instead, the brothers were paid in scrip, exchangeable for parcels of land ceded to the authority in the northern part of the state and scheduled to be auctioned off that autumn. They took their pay in government land in and around LaPorte. He arrived there in 1831.
His original homestead was located off Andrew Avenue. It was built in 1832 and razed in 1999. In 1869, he purchased the "James Andrew Mansion" for $10,000. It is located at 1001 Madison Street in LaPorte.
In 1823, James Andrew, Jr. married Abigail Lane. They had three children; Catherine Piatt Andrew-Andrew, James Andrew, III., who died in childhood and William Lane Andrew. His first wife, Abigail Lane, died in 1842. He married his second wife Sarah Ross in 1846. James Andrew, Jr. has a large family obelisk in the Pine Lake Cemetery.

Dr. John Andrew (1748-1814); Revolutionary War Veteran: The first surgeon form New Jersey to join the Continental Army. He served for seven years and was with George Washington in the Valley Forge campaign and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis.
