According to McCain's "The Story of Jackson," he was a prominent physician in early Jackson days. In 1842, he partnered with Dr. William R. Gist, a noted orator and lecturer who was active in the civic life of Jackson.

Buried with him in the Cabaniss family plot are his wife Susan Lindsey Cabaniss (and her parents Landy W. and Susan Marie Lindsey) and five children: Ann Elizabeth (Aunt Bet) Cabaniss, William Fontaine (Willie) Cabaniss, Lucy Estelle Cabaniss, A. B. (Doc) Cabaniss, Jr., and Susan Marie (Aunt Sue) Cabaniss.
