Pool (1775-1834) and Alcey/Ailey Powell (1779-aft 1850) of Wake County; and maternal grandchild of Urias Baucom (1794-1879) and Elizabeth Betsy Lee (1797-1853) of Clayton, Johnston Co, NC.
Eveline was just 17 years old when she married (1st) on September 15, 1847 to JOHN D. STURDIVANT, the 20-year old son of Allen Sturdivant (1788-1855) of Sussex Co, VA who removed to Wake County, NC and married Elizabeth Griffis. Eveline and John would become parents of 3 known surviving children:
* Mary Elizabeth Sturdivant (1858-1949)
* Sallie Sturdivant (1862-aft 1940)
* Bettie Sturdivant (1865-1947)
When Civil War broke, 26-year old John Sturdivant, father of two, enlisted on September 11, 1863 as a Private in Company D, NC 31st Regiment (later transferred to Co. I), along with his brother Allen Sturdivant and his wife's brother, Quinton Poole. He received a gunshot wound to the arm and was hospitalized on or about June 4, 1864; and was recorded as "deserted" on June 21, 1864, with no further military record found. He must have made his was home for a time, and his last child, Bettie, was born in April 1865.
John D. Sturdivant died sometime between 1864-1870. The young widow, then just 26 years old, removed to her parents farm in Auburn with her 3 young children.
On February 18, 1874, the 34-year old widow, Eveline Poole Sturdivant married (2nd) to 36-year old James Devereaux Adams, and up-and-coming farmer & merchant in Clayton. They couple would become parents to 3 known children:
* Ellen "Ella" Blanche Adams(1874-1936)
* Ernest D. Adams (1876-1922)
* Ambrosia "Brosia" McKee Adams (1888-1929)
Eveline was widowed a 2nd time when her husband of 37 years died at age 73 in 1911. Eveline later moved in with her son Ernest, and died at his home in Raleigh in 1920 at age 80.
Daughter, Bettie Sturdivant, married her stepfather's brother, David Washington Adams (1834-1919), becoming his (2nd) wife.
Her daughter from her 1st marriage, Sallie Sturdivant, married (1st) to William Troy Surles (1865-1896) of Cumberland County and was mother to 2 known children: Walter Raven Surles (1891) and Hugh Sexton Surles Sr.. Sallie married (2nd) to the widower,
Henry Yancey Scarborough (1861-1930). When Henry died in 1930, Sallie removed to Rocky Mount, NC where he son and several stepchildren lived. She died there sometime after 1940 and is believed to be buried in Pineview Cemetery.
