Obituary dated September 24, 1941 Reno Evening Gazette (Reno, Nevada) - Page 14

"Dan W. Dunkle, Treasurer for 27 Years, Dies

Treasurer of Washoe county for twenty-seven years, and a resident of Reno since 1891, Daniel W. (Dan) Dunkle, seventy-three years old, died last night at his home, 237 State street. He suffered a stroke last Sunday after having been in ill health for some time.

Mr. Dunkle had been closely connected with county affairs since 1912. He became undersheriff of Washoe county under Sheriff A. A. Burke in that year and held the position until 1913. Then he was named deputy city treasurer of Reno. He was appointed county treasurer in 1914 and had been elected to office in the succeeding years, the last time being in 1938.

Born on January 21, 1868 in McArthur, Ohio, he came to Nevada in 1880 with his parents, and settled in Eureka. His father, the late John P. Dunkle, was engaged in mining. Mr. Dunkle went to work for the Wells Fargo Express company in 1886 and held a position with the company until 1907. During this time he had come to Reno to live. He was married to Lola Thoms in 1894 in Sacramento. For a year or two he operated a hotel in Blair, Nev., and after his return to Reno he was associated with Sam Armanko in conducting a cigar and newspaper stand.

Mr. Dunkle was throughout his lifetime an ardent baseball fan. He seldom missed a ball game in this vacinity, and it was a habit to make the trip east each year for the playing of the baseball world's series. He was forced to miss the trip last year because of ill health. He was also an enthusiastic hunter. He was a member and had served as treasurer of Reno lodge of Elks.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lola Dunkle of Reno; a daughter, Mrs. Harvey E. Luce of Las Vegas; two grandchildren, Darrell Dunkle Luce and Jean Luce of Las Vegas and two sisters, Mrs. Sally Stinson of Reno and Mrs. Jennie Bishop of Pasadena, Calif.

Mr. Dunkle's only son, Darrell was killed in action in France during the world war, and the local post of the American Legion is named in his memory.

Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock from the home chapel of the Ross-Burke company. Burial will be in the Masonic cemetery."
