He married Aline Bell in April 1939, whom he had met as a Marine while stationed in San Diego, California. Red volunteered to reenter the Marine Corps in 1942, several months after America's entry in World War II. He was wounded in action at the battle of Peleliu in September 1944 and was discharged as a first sergeant in November 1945, returning as a highway patrolman for the state of Texas. Following assignments in Corsicana and Greenville, Texas, Red was promoted to the Texas Rangers in 1954. Red was initially assigned to Comanche County, Texas, and was transferred two years later to Company B where he served as a Texas Ranger in Mount Pleasant, Texas.
