J. Albert Spence, Jr., of New Eagle died November 14, 2011 in his home. He was born October 6, 1918, the oldest son of Joseph Albert Sr. and Bertha Isaac Spence.

On May 31, 1942, he married Rose Popovich Spence who died in 1980. Albert was a World War II veteran serving with the HQ Squadron Fleet Air Wing 2 in the Pacific. He returned home after the war in 1946 and worked at US Steel Clairton Works where he retired after 42 years of service. Albert could do anything he put his mind to. He was a mechanic of the highest caliber being an aviation mechanic during the war and building and working on race cars and personal cars most of his adult life. Albert loved his family, the outdoors and any type of racing. In the 50's and 60's, he was a member of the Pittsburgh Racing Association. Recently, his memberships include: USAC, IMCA, AAA Sprint Car and Midget Race Car organizations, the Cranberry Glade Lake Hunting Club, Carroll American Legion James C. Ford Post 949 and the Mid Mon Valley Shipmates. Albert enjoyed telling a joke and was very fond of all his friends at Lignelli Manor.

Surviving are his two sons, J. Albert (Becky) Spence III of Washington, Robert A. (Melanie) Spence of Monongahela; three grandsons, Scott (Imee) Spence of Aiea, HI, Ryan Spence of Monongahela, and James (Kim) Spence of Palatine, IL; great granddaughter, Ashlyn Rose Spence of Palatine, IL; brother, Paul (Fay) Spence of Hudson, Florida; sister, Norma Spence Simmen of New Eagle; brother-in-law, Ted (Beatty) Popovich of Monongahela.

In addition to his first wife Rose, he was preceded in death by his second wife, Norma Rocco Spence, sisters, Margaret Spence Lape and Eliza Spence Towner.

Friends will be received on Friday, Nov. 18, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Frye Funeral Home Inc., 427 W. Main Street, Monongahela where services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Raymond Ursin officiating. Committal services and interment will follow in Monongahela Cemetery with full military honors accorded at the grave by the Mon Valley Honor Guard and Firing Squad.

Memorial contributions in Albert's memory may be made to the Mid Mon Valley Shipmates, 906 Thomas Street, Monongahela, PA 15063 or to the Washington County Humane Society, P.O. Box 66, Eighty Four, PA 15330. The Mid Mon Valley Shipmates will conduct a Two Bell Ceremony Friday evening at 7:30 PM in the funeral home.
