Joseph was mustered in to the 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery on Feb. 9, 1862 and died in a Washington DC hospital about a year later. His original stone has been replaced by a government issue one. It reads:

Lying on the ground just above it is a broken fragment of the original one. According to James N. Arnold's 1890 transcription, it said:
Bat. B 1st R.I.L. Artillery
Died Feb 24, 1863 from
the effects of wounds
received in the U.S. Service
during the Great Rebellion.
Aged 21 years
