Wayne D. Criddle, 82, died at home, Salt Lake City, November 29, 1996. Born May 7, 1914, Syracuse, Utah to William Delbert and Hazel Armstrong Criddle. Married Erma Ellen Sheffield, June 16, 1934. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple.


Wayne received a BS in Civil Engineering, Utah State Agricultural College and an MS in Civil Engineering/Hydraulics, University of Wisconsin. His distinguished career including working with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Soil Conservation Service where he was instrumental in development of the snow survey and stream flow forecasting program used in the Western US. He authored many technical articles and was joint developer of the "Blaney-Criddle Method" for determining irrigation water requirement, used throughout the world. Wayne served as Utah State Engineer under Gov. George D. Clyde (1957-1965), professor at Utah State University, an owner of Crestline Supply, and president of Clyde, Criddle, Woodward, Inc., Consulting Engineers. He consulted with numerous private firms, foreign governments, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs specializing in development of water projects and administering water rights. He was special consultant to the staffs of Presidents' Eisenhower and Johnson in the Middle East and Viet Nam.


He was active in many professional societies, serving as president of the International Congress of Irrigation and Drainage and the Western States Engineers. Wayne received the 1970 John Deere Gold Medal Award of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and 1983 Distinguished Service Award from Utah State University. Wayne and Erma traveled the U.S. and world together. He set an example of honesty, integrity and hard work for his children, grandchildren and extended family members for which they will be forever grateful. He was an active member of the LDS Church and with Erma, served a mission to the Liberty Stake.


Survived by Erma, loving wife of 62 years; children, Byron Dean Criddle, Salt Lake City; Richard S. Criddle (JoAn), Dixon, Calif.; Kathleen C. Mason, Salt Lake City; and Connie C. Mason (David), Salt Lake City; 20 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren; brothers, Lynn A. Criddle (Marjory), West Point, Utah; Dean W. Criddle (Joy), Pleasant Hill, Calif.; sisters Golda C. Parrish, Bertha C. Halling (Merrill), both Clearfield, Utah. Preceded in death by grandson, Douglas Wayne Criddle, sister, Effie Criddle, brother-in-law Monroe Parrish.


Funeral services will be at 12 noon, Friday, December 6, 1996 in the Parley's 5th Ward, 2615 E. Stringham Ave. (2285 So.), Salt Lake. Friends may call on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 So. Highland Dr. and Friday at the ward from 10:45-11:45 a.m. Interment Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
