Charles Ernest Pia, age 84, passed away at home in Hemet, CA on April 14, 2012.
He was born on May 20, 1927 in San Pedro, CA to G. Ernest and Lydia Pia. He graduated from San Pedro High School on June 22, 1945 with special recognition for having completed 1,100 hours of study in mechanical drafting. He entered the U.S. Navy on May 12, 1945 at age 17, two months shy of his high school graduation. He served honorably until July 25, 1946. He married Lila May McGrath in San Pedro, CA on June 13, 1950.
Charles spent his career working in the manufacturing profession primarily in the aerospace industry in Southern California. Although he did not attend college, he finished his career as a manufacturing engineer with the responsibility of winning contract bids for his employer.
Charles liked woodworking, camping, dutch oven cooking, home improvement projects, "chicken foot", and community service. He was quick to laugh and loved and respected his Italian heritage. He joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1971 and quickly established himself as a "go-to guy" whenever help was needed. One of his greatest roles in life was that of Scoutmaster. He mentored many young men while revitalizing a moribund program. Six of his boys attained the rank of Eagle Scout under his leadership. He also served as a full-time LDS missionary, along with his wife Lila, three times over four years in the mid to late 1990s.
His wife, Lila M. Pia, of Hemet, CA; his Son, Gary E. Pia of South Pasadena, CA; his grandchildren Daniel Pia of Orem, UT and Katie Pia Padilla of Sherman Oaks, CA and his Sister, Shirley Mac Burney of Stanton, CA, survives him.

Charles Ernest Pia will be remembered as a leader of boys and a molder of men.
