Ethel Ione Hunnicutt Allen was born the eight child and third daughter of John Fulton Hunnicutt and Eunice Bright Hunnicutt. She was voted Most Outstanding Senior from Seneca High School Class of 1942. A 1946 graduate of Winthrop College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Ethel remained active in their Alumni Association. After graduating from college, she moved to Eastern North Carolina to take a position with Tidewater Electric Company, and after her marriage to Radford Reed Allen, she made Bladen County her home. She was a dedicated community and church leader. While serving as the Director of Food Service for Bladen County Schools, she was voted Administrator of the Year. The job she most loved and enjoyed was teaching eighth grade. Ethel was a member of Mount Horeb Presbyterian Church where she held every office in the church. She was the first woman to serve on the Morehead Scholarship Committee from Bladen County and was a catalyst in promoting the first female scholar. She was a caring and generous person who touched the lives of many people. Her love for family, friends, flowers and food will continue to live on with those that were a part of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Radford Reed Allen. Mrs. Allen died at her home at age 77.
