Legally named John Walters Rose, later he used name of Jack W. Rose. Born in San Jose, California to Hiram B. Rose and "Maggie" C. Racey. After his parents divorced in 1903, Jack lived with his mother until he signed up with the US Navy. He worked on the USS Promethus at Mare Island, in the San Francisco bay area. In 1917 he was hired as a machinist for the Kansas State Penitentiary. In October of the same year he entered WWI as a sargeant machinist mate in the 24th Engineers, Headquarters Company, Engineers Corps. A month after enlistment Jack was in France, driver of a tank, one of the ""Treat 'em Rough and Ready" units. He was awarded France's "Croix de Guerre" for his bravery. Jack was wounded and returned to Lansing, Kansas. He next appears in 1929 when he marries for a 3rd time, Gladys Larosher and works as a Steam Electric Engineer. According to an obituary, a son of most recent marriage survives, named Jack P. Rose.
