Salem-- John F. Ahern, 62, died in Salem Hospital Sunday morning ater an illness of many months.
Born in Salem, son of the late Eugene T. and Nora E. (Donovan)Ahern, he attended Salem schools; he was president of the Salem High School Class of 1947, where he had played football, baseball and hockey.
Mr. Ahern was a pitcher for the Boston red Sox Triple A team until entering the Army in December 1950. Following his discharge, he became an electrician and belonged to the I.B.E.W. Local 259 and Local 103 working on the North Shore.
He was a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks 799 of Salem, the D.A.V. of Salem. and had coached the Cardinals Baseball Team in the Salem Pony League.

Mr. Ahern is survived by his wife of 36 years, Mary (Ahern) Ahern; sons, Michael Ahern of San Francisco;, Sean Ahern of Brocton and William Ahern of Salem; a daughter,Mary Ellan Gibb of Lynn; a brother, William Ahern of Beverly; sisters, Mary Gallant and Esther Rubin; two grandchildren, Heather and Amory Ahern; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Mass in St. James Church, in Salem. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery.
