Ed was born on May 22, 1927 in Alpha, North Dakota the son of Edward Charles and Mary (Otremba) Scherman. He was raised and educated in Golva and Beach, North Dakota graduating from the Beach High School in 1945. After graduation he stayed on the farm in Golva and also owned the Golva Hardware Store. He married Ellenore Stuart in 1949 in Golva. They moved to Glendive, Montana in 1950. He went to work for Northern Pacific Railroad and was a conductor and brakeman until his retirement from Burlington Northern Railroad in 1989. Ellenore preceded him in death in 1993.
Ed was active in the Knights of Columbus and was serving as Grand Knight at the time of his death. Ed enjoyed traveling and playing bingo.
