Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the United States Marine Corps as "Joseph Melvin". He distinguished himself in conduct in the presence of the enemy in battles while with the Eighth Army Corps on March 25, 27 and 29, and on April 4, 1899. His citation was issued on July 19, 1901.
