When James W. Steele was a boy he came to Ohio with his parents from Maryland and located in Muskingum County, where January 9, 1840 he married Miss Nancy Brown. Shortly afterwards they moved to Swan Township, Vinton County, where they lived until their deaths. There were nine children from the marriage.
