Thomas Callahan - Dead Here at 90
A colorful Akron old-timer, Thomas B. "Ben" Callahan, 90 died Friday in his home at 82 hall St. after a brief illness. Mrs. Callahan was a native of Middlebury, now East Akron. His father was also a native of the area, establishing his family among the earliest settlers. Mr. Callahan was the first baby to be baptized in the present St. Vincent Church. his life is filled with "firsts." He first organized and became foreman of the B.F. Goodrich Co tin shop. After 22 years there he established his own sheet metal shop which he operated until his retirement in 1945. Mr. Callahan became one of Akron's first championship bowlers. When Annunciation Church was formed he became a charter member. A few years ago, he moved from East Akron to the downtown area and joined St. Vincent and its Holy Name Society. He was past president of the tinner's union, a member of the Builders Exchange and Sheet Metal Contractors Association. He was a charter member of the Goodrich 20-Year Club and a charter member of the Akron Fifty year Club. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Callahan leaves his wife, Rose; a daughter, Mrs. Mary McNellis of Akron; a son, Edward L of Akron, and six grandchildren. The Callahans celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Sept 6, 1955
...Requiem high mass will be sung at 9 am Monday in St Vincent Church. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery
