Remus A. Baldwin
Remus A. Baldwin served in Co. D, 55th Indiana Infantry and Co. K, 128th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He served as a private in Co. D, 55th Indiana Infantry. He was a resident of Logansport, Indiana, when he enlisted in Co. K, 128th Indiana Infantry on March 7, 1864. He was promoted to corporal and mustered out on April 10, 1866.
The 55th Indiana Infantry was organized for a three months term of service at Indianapolis on June 16, 1862, and was mustered out from September 6 to October 23, 1862.
The 128th Indiana Infantry was organized at Michigan City, Indiana, from December 15, 1863, to March 7, 1864. The regiment was mustered in on March 18, 1864, and was mustered out on April 10, 1866.
Remus A. Baldwin was born in 1842. He married Mary J. Tomlinson, who was born on November 6, 1842, in Ohio, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Tomlinson.
In 1880, Remus and Mary lived in Ingham County, Michigan, later moving to Kalkaska County, Michigan. They were the parents of two known children, Franklin and Arthur.
Franklin Baldwin was born about 1870 in Michigan, and died from epilepsy on May 14, 1887, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County.
Arthur Baldwin was born in 1872 in Michigan. He married Myrtle Shonts on November 29, 1892, at Westwood in Kalkaska County. Myrtle was the daughter of Thomas and Alvina/Almina (Fleek) Shonts. She was born in 1874 in Pennsylvania. A daughter, Glade Belle Baldwin, was born on August 7, 1895, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County. Arthur married (2) Lena Baldwin on October 21, 1908. She was the daughter of James and Lillian (Webb) Baldwin.
A homestead exemption affidavit was signed by Remus A. Baldwin on June 7, 1921, for Lot 13, Block 5, Little's First Addition to Rapid City (Town 28N, Range 8W) township of Clearwater, Kalkaska County.
Mrs. Mary J. Baldwin died from accidental burns on July 11, 1920, in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County.
Civil War veteran Remus Baldwin died in 1924. Mr. and Mrs. Baldwin are buried in the Westwood Cemetery in Rapid River Township, Kalkaska County, Michigan, in the same lot as their son, Franklin. Mr. Baldwin's grave is marked by a family stone.
