A longtime resident of Rockford, WA and Spokane, WA passed away peacefully July 5, 2011. Bill was born on April 16, 1922 at Home, KS to Emma and Gilmore O'Connell.
Bill was the first in the family to attend college at Creighton University before going to work for Trans World Airlines. Then he joined the Army Air Corps and became a Bombardier / Navigator. During World War II Bill was stationed in Alaska flying daily missions to measure the magnetic North Pole.
At this time he met his wife Christie Carlson, a dietician also stationed in Fairbanks. Upon Christie's discharge from the military he took leave and was married at her family's home in Rockford, WA. They then moved to Fairfield, CA until Bill was discharged.
Bill went back to work with Trans World Airlines until being called back into service for the Korean War, where he served in Europe as a Squadron Supply Officer and Navigator. After being discharged again Bill went back to Trans World Airlines where he retired as Station Manger at Los Angeles International Airport.
Bill and Christie then moved to Christie's family farm in Rockford, WA. Bill continued to work for several businesses including Farmers and Merchants Bank, Fairfield Grange, and finally as a funeral director at Thornhill Valley Funeral Home.
Bill and Christie enjoyed traveling and visited many countries worldwide. Bill was active with Masonic Temple, where he was District Deputy, and with the American Legion and Shriners.
His wife Christie, of 54 years, precedes Bill in death as does his older brother Pat. Bill is survived by his son, Kevin (Suzanne) O'Connell of Spokane; daughter, Karen (Harvey) Koch of Spokane, WA; four grandchildren, Laurie Nisbet of Spokane, WA, Chad Koch of Arlington, WA, Erin O'Connell of Portland, OR, and Kaitlyn O'Connell of Spokane; two great-grandchildren; niece, Shelia Brady of Auburn, WA; nephew, John Patrick O'Connell of Palm Springs, CA.
Memorials may be given to Hospice of Spokane or Fairview Cemetery. Services will be Friday, July 8, 2011 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Marks Lutheran Church, 24th and Grand. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Rockford, WA."
