Grace was the eldest of six children born to Emerson and Lillian Musser Gambler. A graduate of Columbia High School class of 1931, Grace went to work right after graduation, glad to have a job during the worst years of the Depression. For many years, she worked as bookkeeper at J C Penney in Columbia, where she met and later married John Baker. After John's return from service in World War II, they moved to New York and thanks to the GI Bill were able to purchase a home. Grace loved going to the movies and good music. She also instilled the love of reading and the value of a good education in her two children. She enjoyed travel with John, especially summer visits with family in Pennsylvania. After John's death, she spent winters with her daughter in New England and the West. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought her much joy during the last years of her life. In declining health for many years, Grace passed away peacefully on May 31, 2004, survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers and many nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her husband, John, two brothers, a sister who died in infancy, and her parents.
