George was born in Pierre and accompanied his parents to Vermillion when they moved back in 1911. He attended school in Vermillion and graduated with the high school class of 1924. In 1926 he enlisted in the navy, and served for four years. Part of that time was spent in the Navy Trades school at Hampton Roads, Virginia, where he graduated with honors. He was then sent to the west coast and was a member of the first crew of the Saratoga aircraft carrier, when that ship was launched.
After completing his term of enlistment in 1930 George returned to Vermillion, and was associated with his father in a furniture repair and carpenter shop on Center Street. Two years later he returned to California, where he opened an upholstering business in North Hollywood. He was married to Lillian in 1935, and took into his home his wife's two children by a previous marriage. George was known as "Dick" Richardson on the west coast. He was a member of the Vermillion Methodist church, and later affiliated with the Methodist Church in North Hollywood.
George was the first in his family to die. He was one of 24 who lost their lives when a fishing boat, the "Spray" capsized 500 feet from shore near Point Mugu (California) pier, as efforts were being made to bring the boat in. George often went on fishing trips on the Spray and his father was worried that he may have died when he read about the sinking. Only a few bodies were recovered and I was told George's was not one of them.
