They had three children before John died in 1863 during the Civil War. She was listed in the 1870 GEORGIA CENSUS, Bibb County, Macon, in the household of her widowed mother, Margaret Snider, as BIRCH, Margaret S., daughter, age 31, no occupation, born Ga. Other siblings were also living in the household. Margaret Sewell Snider Birch was almost eighty-two years old when she died, January 2, 1920.
