Born in Morschheim Canton, Kirchembolanden Dist. Rhineland Pfalz (formerly Kaiserslautern, Palitinate Bavaria), the fifith of six children of Karl Dietrich Zahn and Anne Margaretha Angst (1807-1861), she immigrated to the USA in the mid 1860's, possibly alone. Siblings had come earlier and some came later.

She married Bernard Knopp in Chicago on Oct. 14, 1868. They had four children. The Knopp family appears at Lake View, Cook Co. in the 1880 Federal Census where Bernard is listed as a market gardener. The family were charter members of Diversay Parkway Evangelical church of Chicago.

The Umbreits appear in Barrington, IL in later records. However, grandson Bernard Umbreit is buried in Phoebe and Bernyard's plot.
