Fred served on active duty in the U.S. Army from 1950 until 1952, then in the reserves until 1969. Fred studied engineering at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He was employed as a tool and die maker for many years and in later life he worked as a lead tool designer at the Rock Island Arsenal. Fred was a skilled craftsman and had a great gift for designing innumerable things. Fred enjoyed woodworking and model railroading. He had a great love for spending time with family and was a devout Christ follower and member of Blackhawk Church.
Fred is survived by wife of 54 years, Molli Rae; children, Donald (Bobbie) Martin and Anne (Phillip) Bakke; grandchildren, Jarrett and Bailey Martin, Chelsea and Cameron (Emily) Bakke; and great-grandchildren, Lola, Laila and Tristan. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Robert Eugene Martin.
A Celebration of Fred's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Blackhawk Church, 9620 Brader Way, Middleton, Wis. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time. Burial will be noon Tuesday, April 30, at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal.
