Obituary

Grace "Gay" Holley Powell, 69, of Clearwater, Florida, passed away on Sunday, April 7, at Brookside Hospice of Palm Harbor. It was just like her to head to Heaven on a Sunday.

Gay was the first child born to Kelsey and Grace Holley in Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from White Station High School in Memphis and went on to be a wife, homemaker, and mom. She dedicated her life to raising her daughters and sharing Jesus with anyone who would let her.

Gay loved children and taught Sunday School for decades. She helped organize and teach Vacation Bible School each summer for many years. Teaching the missions class gave her the opportunity to talk about her favorite subject: sharing Jesus. Gay spent most of her time at church, in prayer meetings, and praying for her friends and family.

She loved to spend time with family and looked forward to every day she had with each one of them. She always had a great time hanging out with all four of her grandsons. She couldn't be more proud of them. The day before she passed, she shared many pictures of them with her nurses at Hospice.

The day before she died, she prayed, "Lord, I want You to be glorified through all of this. I just love You so much." She showed us all how to live and how to die with beauty, grace, and the lesson that Jesus is everything. She left us with a legacy of making Christ the priority in our lives, no matter how difficult it becomes.

She is survived by her daughters, Catherine Keyston (James), Julie Pollitt (John) and grandsons John, Jacob, Ethan, and Nathaniel. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Kenny, nieces Laura and Anna and nephews Asa and Sergey, as well as many, many friends and family in Tennessee, Florida and around the country.

Gay was preceded in death by her parents, sister Merrie, and nephew Jordan. We know the minute she stepped into Heaven, she bowed at the feet of Jesus, hugged her family, and ran a couple laps without breaking a sweat.

Jocko Valley Baptist Church is a place that was close to our mom's heart. Our Uncle Kenny and Aunt Merrie (our mom's only sister) founded the church almost 20 years ago. Merrie went to be with the Lord in 2011, and Kenny continues to serve faithfully as the pastor. Jocko Valley Baptist Church is located on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montanta and serves the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. Each year they provide local school children with backpacks, school supplies, Christmas gifts, Easter baskets and other necessities. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations for these children to be sent to Jocko Valley Baptist Church.
