James R. Hastings, pioneer settler of Nebraska, passed away at his home on South street in this city on Sunday, October 26.
Mr. Hastings was born in Chicago, December 31, 1857, and came to Nebraska in 1867, living first at Florence and then on the farm near Rose Hill.
He was married to Georgia Matteson, March 1, 1884, and to this union five sons and five daughters were born, all of whom are living.
He was taken sick October 21, with an attack of heart failure. Funeral Services were held Tuesday at the Methodist church and interment made in the Blair cemetery.
He was a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge and of Oak Camp, W.O.W. The pallbearers were his friends Boone and Ed Newkirk, Jesse and Will Hansen, John and Will Taylor.
Note: W.O.W. is Woodmen of the World; I.O.O.F. is International Order of Odd Fellows—the emblems of both are on the large family tombstone
