Dr. James P. Speer is Claimed by Death
Dentist, Native of Virginia, Victim of Heart Disease--Practiced Here 15 Years - [in the office previously occupied by Clara Barton for her "Office of Correspondence with the Friends of the Missing Men of the U.S. Army" office - after the Civil War ended in 1865.]
Dr. James Patrick Speer, 47 years old and a practicing dentist of this city for the last 15 years, died of heart disease in the Roosevelt Hotel Yesterday.
A native of Virginia, Dr. Speer was graduated in dentistry from Richmond College, now the University of Richmond. He was the owner of a home, Hickory Hills, at McLean, Virginia. [Hickory Hills is a home that was later owned by John F. and Jackie Kennedy, and then sold to Robert and Ethel Kennedy.]
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Dora Starr Speer, who is his second wife: three sons and three daughters, all children of his first wife, who died several years ago. The sons are Ira of this city; Seaward H. and James Patrick, students at Randolph-Macon Academy, in Virginia; while the daughters are Mrs. C. W. Sisson, Miss Lucile and Miss Virginia. He is also survived by two brothers, Dr. A. D. Speer and Dr. T. F. Speer, both practicing dentists of Kentucky, and two sisters, Mrs. E. L. Whitley and Mrs. Daniel Kelly, both of Virginia.
Funeral services will be conducted at Gawler's undertaking parlors Monday afternooon, at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. G. G. Johnson, pastor of Immanual Baptist Church will officiate.
Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
