Ora "Nola" Thompson Ellison Rouse, 97, of McAlester, died Friday April 19, 2013, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

She was born on Feb. 29, 1916, in Big Cedar to Robert Coe and Carrie (Jennings) Thompson. She married Clayton Ellison on Oct. 18, 1931, and he preceded her in death on April 2, 1938. She then married Leon Rouse on May 16, 1948, and he also preceded her in death on April 22, 1988.

She worked at Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City inspecting aircraft during World War II. She returned to southeast Oklahoma and received her Master's Degree in Education from East Central State College. She began her teaching career in 1946 at Mountain View School just north of McAlester. She taught at many of the rural schools around southeast Oklahoma and in Pittsburg County, including Flowery Mound, Harper's Valley, Pittsburg, Bower, Bugtussle, Adamson, Atwood, Hartshorne and McAlester. After teaching 35 years, she retired from McAlester Public Schools in 1981. She loved teaching and was devoted to her students.

She and her husband, Leon, also raised registered Angus cattle for over 50 years. She was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family, gardening and raising African Violets. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of McAlester.

She is survived by her two daughters and one son-in-law, Billye Brown, of McAlester, and Sherri and Joe Breeden, of McAlester; granddaughters, Terri Steidley, of McAlester, Christie Montis and her husband Fred, of Flower Mound, Texas, Felicia Hegwood and her husband Melvin, of Benton, Ark., Shannon Gardecki and her husband, Todd, of Little Rock, Ark., great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters, Danny Judd, of McAlester, Randy Judd, of Slaton, Texas, Cale Montis, of Flower Mound, Texas, Alex Frontera, of Benton, Ark., Michaela Faith, of Little Rock, Ark., Sarah Faith, of Little Rock, Ark.; two sisters Alta Lake, of McAlester, Bernice Fryer, of Erie, Pa.; a brother, RC Thompson and his wife Wanda, of DuPont, Wash.; sister-in-law, Ruth Thompson, of Bokoshe; nieces and nephews, Vicki Lake, of Tahlequah, Lisa Thompson, of Bokoshe, Linda Fryer, of Erie, Alan Fryer, of Roanoke, Va. Leslie Frisius, of Shelton, Wash., and Jerry Thompson, of Medford, Ore. and many caring family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Bob Ellison; a grandson, Kim Holt; and a brother, Junun Thompson.
