Henley Madison Lawrence was the son of William Anthony Lawrence and Sarah Elizabeth Wallace. He married Laura Josephine Sliger on September 5, 1890, in Lavaca County, Texas. Together they had three children, Ora Elzie Lawrence (1891), Ozias Elbert Lawrence (1894), and Henry Ezra Lawrence 1896).

Henley lost his sight and was admitted to The Blind Institute in Austin, Texas. He had epilepsy and suffered a seizure on Friday, September 25, 1896, causing him to fall from the second-floor balcony in the music and literature department to the ground floor hitting his head, and suffering a fatal concussion. He died the next morning from his injuries.

The accident was reported in two known newspapers, and those articles are attached to this memorial. However, Henley's name is wrong in both news articles. One lists him as H.W. (as seen in this headstone), and the other lists his name as Henry.

Sometime following his widow, Laura Josephine's death, a second gravesite, and a headstone was placed (see Memorial ID #31704670) in Georges Creek Cemetery in Somervell, Texas where Laura is buried. It is unknown if Henley's body was moved to Somervell though.
