Lyle served in the Army National Guard 116th Engineer Battalion during the Korean War.

On 15 June, 1949, he married Mary Lou Nanney in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. They made their home in Rigby.

In 1972, Lyle moved his family to Idaho Falls and went to work selling cars for Imperial Motors and then Ellsworth Dodge. Later, Lyle and his brother Wayne founded Colonial Auto Sales in Idaho Falls. He also received his pilots license. Mary Lou passed away in 1991.
