John A. Cervantes, 72 years old of Colton, California, passed away on April 12, 2013 at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. He was born on May 20, 1940, in Riverside, California to John and Mary Cervantes. John retired from the military and worked as a grounds keeper for over 35 years at Cal State San Bernardino.

Survivors include his wife, Charlotte and sons, Martin and Juan Cervantes. Also, his loving grandchildren, Jonathan, Milagros and Joshua.

Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2013, beginning at 9 a.m. at Montecito Valley View Chapel, followed by full military honors at Montecito Memorial Park.

Passed away peacefully in Colton and was taken up to Heaven on April 12, 2013. He was born in Riverside to John and Mary Cervantes on May 20th 1940 and raised in Loma Linda. He joined the Army National Guard in 1956 and Graduated from Redlands High School in 1959. In 1961 to 1965 he enlisted in the Regular Army. After discharging from the military he found employment at Cal State San Bernardino, where he worked for 35 years. He married Charlotte Casillas, his wife for 44 years, in October1968. John and Charlotte raised two children in Colton, Juan and Martin Cervantes. John graduated from Valley College in 1973 with a degree in Liberal Arts. John was on the Colton City Park and Recreations board in 1977. He then re-enlisted in the Army National Guard in 1978 and retired at the rank of Sergeant First Class in the 40th infantry Division B troop 1/18 U.S. Calvary. In 1978, He co-founded and was a four term president of Colton Youth Soccer. John was also a faithful member of the Family of God Church in Colton. He is survived by his wife Charlotte, sons Martin and Juan, daughter in-law Ileana and his grandchildren Jonathan, Milagros and Joshua, his sister Connie Granillo and brothers, Robert and Richard Cervantes and many family and friends. John is now in the Lord's presence with his mother and father, brother's George and Tom. He will be missed by us here on Earth but soon we will all be reunited. Services will be from 9 am to 12 pm at Montecito Memorial Park Chapel, 3520 East Washington St. Colton, CA 92324.Published in San Bernardino Sun on April 21, 2013.
