Hammond S. Datesman, 78, of 1220 Staman Lane, Apt. 1-C, Columbia, died Saturday morning at his home after a long illness. He was the husband of Joyce Quinn Datesman, with whom he celebrated their 17th wedding anniversary July 22.

Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late E. Hammond and Flora Urban Datesman. He was a lifelong resident of Columbia.

Datesman retired in 1979 from Hamilton Technologies Inc., Lancaster, where he worked as a machinist for 39 years.

A 1935 graduate of Columbia High School, he also graduated from the Williamson Trade School, Media, in 1938.

He was a life member of the First English Lutheran Church, Columbia. He was a former church councilman and was an active council member during the building of the new church in 1956. He sang in the church choir for 20 years.

Datesman was the past Exulted Ruler of Columbia Lodge 1074 of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks; and a member of Chickies Rock Lodge 307 Loyal Order of Moose; and the Columbia Lodge of the Artisans.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Shirley, wife of Lee Mathiot, Columbia; three stepdaughters, Vickie Shaeffer, Columbia; Sandra Gonzales, Colombia, South America; Joy Severt, Jacksonville, Fla.; a stepson, David Shaeffer, Columbia; two granddaughters; five step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Beatrice, Columbia; and a brother, Richard, Columbia.
