SUICIDE AT RANTOUL – A Woman Hangs Herself
On Monday forenoon Carl Albrecht, who resided in section 28, 2 ½ miles south of Potter's Mills, in the town of Rantoul came here and stated that his wife Marie D. Albrecht, had committed suicide.......Justice Green, Marshal Erdmann and Doctor Hoyer immediately proceeded to the place, a jury was empanelled, an inquest held and a verdict returned that she destroyed her own life.
The deceased was 55 years old and five years ago was married to Albrecht. She was a widow and he a widower at the time, and both had grown up children by former marriages and were possessed of unruly tongues which caused much unhappiness and ill treatment, particularly so when the husband was under the influence of beer, and matters had arrived at such a stage that she had frequently stated that she would hang herself and thus get rid of her troubles. On Sunday the husband went to Potter's Mills and it is supposed that the deceased dreaded that he would return intoxicated and abuse her, carried her threat into execution and put an end to her life in the afternoon.
He returned home, in the evening, as expected, pretty well "set up" and retired to bed about nine o'clock. In the morning he sent his hired girl to get a neighbor's boy to assist him stacking and on the way through the woods the young people discovered the body.
When he was notified he didn't go near the remains but came here and wanted to purchase a twelve shilling coffin remarking that "she make him much trouble."
Squire Green says that the place where the deed was committed was "the prettiest place of the kind for committing such and act he ever saw" and must have been selected for some time by the deceased. A large forked oak and fallen in such a manner that one portion rested on the ground while the other was just in reach over head, and from which grew a branch 7 or 8 inches in diameter. To his branch she attached the fatal cord and jumped to eternity. .......
