Zachariah was a sea Captain on the East coast, carpenter, and a ship builder. He heard the gospel preached by William Hyde in Maine, joined church August 10, 1840. Zachariah was a body guard to Joseph Smith, one of the first to reach the scene of the tragedy. Sealed in the Nauvoo Temple January 31,1846. Owned property in Nauvoo, but mobs forced them out of their homes across the Mississippi River for safety.
Called to go with the first company West, but Brigham asked him to stay and run the ferry. Operating the ferry three days and nights he contracted pneumonia and died February 13, 1846. His son and brother-in-law buried him during the night.
