Ivan J. Dempsey, 88, of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, February 29, 2012, at the V.A. Medical Center.

He was a native of Washington County and a son of the late Sam S. and Macy Love Dempsey. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, in 2009. One son, Sam Dempsey, and one grandson, Jim Dempsey, also precedes him.

Mr. Dempsey was a member of the First Christian Church in Johnson City, where he was an active member in the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday School Class.

He was retired from the Singer Corporation as a Store Manager.

Mr. Dempsey was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He served in Europe for 30 months and came out as a 1st Lieutenant. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He also served in Korea.

Survivors include; one daughter, Jane Dempsey Crewey and her husband, John, of Bristol, TN; one son, Jerry Dempsey and his wife, Sue, of Piney Flats; two sisters, Charlotte Fair and Martha Gouge, both of Johnson City; one Granddaughter, Jennifer Carter and her husband, Josh, of Johnson City; one Grandson, Sam Nelson, of Bristol, TN; two Great grandchildren, Elizabeth Crew Nelson and Madelyn James Carter; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Thursday from the Morris-Baker North Chapel. Mr. Roland Whittemore will officiate.

Burial services will be conducted Friday at 10:00 a.m. from the Monte Vista Memorial Park. A procession will leave the funeral home for the cemetery at 9:45 a.m. Friday. Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday.
