Stanley S. Baran, 80, of Cook Street, Hudson section of Plains Township, died Friday at the Wilkes-Barre General Hospital after he was stricken ill at his home.

Born in Plains Township, he was the son of the late George and Eva Jablonski Baran.

A lifelong resident of the township, he attended Plains Township schools.

Before retiring he was employed by A & P Markets as a meat cutter for many years.

He was a decorated U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific Theater of Operations. He served on the NTS Sampson, N.Y.; NTS Norfolk, Va.; RS Brooklyn, N.Y.; and USS U.M. Moore, under Capt. Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr.

He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church and American Legion Post 558, both of Plains Township.

He and his wife, the former Stella Toloczko celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary on June 28, 1999.

He was preceded in death by brothers, John and Walter; sisters, Mary Gawryck and Sister M. Agreda of the Bernadine Order.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Stephen H., Nanticoke; daughter, Susan L. Osmanski, Plains Township; brothers, Frank, Kingston; Joseph, Avon-by-the-Sea, N.J.; Casimir, Mountainside, N.J.; Helen Synoracki, Williamsport; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Mark V. Yanaitis Funeral Home, 55 Stark St., Plains Township, with a funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. in SS. Peter and Paul Church, with his cousin, the Rev. Bernard A. Toloczko, of Holy Trinity Church, Nanticoke, officiating.

Interment will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Carverton.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Military services will be conducted Tuesday at the cemetery by members of the Joseph E. Conlon American Legion Post 558, Plains Township.
