Dr. Maurice Cary Powers, 88, of 104 Earl Street, Camden, died Saturday, June 30, 2012 at the Albemarle Hospital. A native of Robeson County, he was the son of the late Cary Powers and Mable Rivers Powers, and the husband of Sue Powers.

Maury was a retired Professor Emeritus at Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, and an aviator in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After several years of research as a geochemist with Shell Oil Company, he realized his true passion was working with the environment and served as a ranger with the National Park Service. Combining natural talents for research and education, he became an environmental science educator. Among other accomplishments, he created and chaired geology and environmental science departments at Catawba College, Bucknell University, and ECSU; spearheaded development of a local Dismal Swamp Boardwalk; and championed numerous educational programs throughout the country. Summer months were spent with family hiking and exploring the Southwest, particularly the back-country mountains, canyons and deserts of Southeast Utah.

Besides his wife he is survived by three daughters, Laurie Powers Chamness of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Caroline Powers Rempe of Guntersville, Ala., and Fawn Roegene Baranko of Gaithersburg, Md.; two sons, Clifton Cary Powers of Cary, and Frank Maury Powers of North Beach, Md.; a brother, Neill (Boot) Powers of Havelock; and thirteen grandchildren.

A memorial service will be Friday, July 6, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Roland Cooper officiating. The family will receive friends in the lobby of the funeral home immediately after the service. Twiford Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC is serving the Powers family. You may express condolences by visiting www.twifordfh.com. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Friends of Arches and Canyonlands Parks: The Bates Wilson Legacy Fund at www.bateswilson.org. Bates Wilson was Maury's friend and supervisor while he served as a ranger at both areas.
