Robert Jellison, son of Robert and Margaret Jellison, was born about 1781, probably in New Jersey. Before he was ten years old his father had brought the family to Derry Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania.

Robert Jellison first married Mary Karns (or Carns), probably around 1802. He lived on land owned by his father in Derry Township, which he inherited in 1826. He lived on this land until his death in 1863, adding in 1833 the 52 acres that he bought from his brother John.

Around 1820 Robert married Phebe, daughter of Zebulon Doty. Phebe died by 1836, when Robert married Mrs. Elizabeth Purnell. By his three wives he had at least 24 children, several of whom died young.

In his will (written in 1859, probated in 1863), Robert instructed that "the tract of land I bought of Brother John of 52 acres" be sold and that the proceeds be divided among his children James, Hannah Doty, Isabella Beaty, Mathew, Jonathan, Doty, Susan Singley, Jane Patterson , and Eliza Duncan. He also left one dollar each for his sons Robert, Samuel, Ephraim and Hugh. Robert willed "the farm on which I now reside" to his son John (his only son by his third wife Elizabeth) with the condition that (1) Robert's wife Elizabeth have the use of the property and household goods during her life and that (2) at specified 1-year intervals after her death John pay $25 to "Catharine married to George Trump," $40 to daughter Mary Ann, $30 to daughter Margaret, and $30 to daughter Malissa. Furthermore, that daughters Mary Ann, Margaret and Malissa "have one bed and bedding and one cow each to be given to them at their marriage."
