CHICAGO - The Rev. Francis T. Czerwionka, CSV, 81, of Chicago, formerly of Springfield, died Tuesday, April 26, 2005, at Resurrection Medical Center in Chicago.

He was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Theodore and Rose Pranschke Czerwionka.

The Rev. Czerwionka attended Ammundsen High School and Lane Technical High School in Chicago, earned a Bachelor of Philosophy degree in Latin from DePaul University in Chicago and completed graduate studies at Jacksonville State Hospital, earning a degree in clinical pastoral education. He professed his first vows with the Clerics of St. Viator in 1948, studied theology at Viatorian Seminary in Evanston and at Catholic University in Washington. He was ordained a Viatorian priest in 1959.

He served as a teacher and assistant dean at Cathedral Boys High School in 1951 and 1952. He was counselor and guardian at Isle of Hope in Savannah, Ga., in 1955 and 1956. He was associate pastor of St. Patrick’s Church and taught at St. Patrick High School in Kankakee from 1959 to 1962. He was chaplain at Manteno State Hospital from 1962 to 1971, Jacksonville State Hospital in 1971 and 1972 and St. John’s Hospital in Detroit in 1973 and 1974. He was chaplain at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights from 1975 to 1981 and St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee from 1981 to 1983. He was pastor of St. George Church from 1983 to 1992 and retired to St. Patrick Church in Kankakee in 1992.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 4th Armored Division and the 10th Armored Infantry and participating in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned five battle stars for major battles in Rome-Arno, southern France, the Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe.

Survivors: three sisters, Genevieve Eck of Bartlett, Rosalie Meyer of Thorp, Wis., and Mrs. Michael Hartnett of Park Ridge; and brother, Fred Czerwionka of Chicago.

Funeral Mass: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. George Church, Bourbonnais. Interment: St. George Church Cemetery, Bourbonnais.
