The Burial of Capt. John R. Black
Confederated Veteran Laid To Rest in Rowlett Cemetery Saturday
The remains of Capt. John R. Black, who died in the old soldiers home at Austin, arrived in McKinney about noon Saturday, September 8 and were conveyed to Rowlett there the interment took place. Dr. E. E. King conducted the funeral services and the burial took place under Masonic auspices. The deceased was a member of St. John's Lodge A. F. and A. M. of McKinney. The deceased was a gallant Confederate veteran, who, for many years after the war, made his home in McKinney and adjacent community. At one time he was manager of the old Alliance Flour Mill at McKinney and enjoyed the respect and confidence of a very wide acquaintance throughout the county.
He is survived by two sons, J. R. Black Jr., of Dallas and Sam Black of Foncine, and by one sister, Mrs. Julia Herndon of Frisco. J. Herndon of Foncine, John, Jeff Black of Frisco are grandsons and Mrs. Frank Jackson of Frisco is a granddaughter of the deceased. The deceased was the stepfather of the late Tom S. Chandler of Foncine, the father of Mrs. Jesse Atkinson of this city. The deceased who was eighty years old or more was a staunch member of the Baptist church for many years.
His passing will be noted with regret by many old comrades and friends throughout our county.
