James Edward Ashley was the son of John H. Ashley and Susie Lee Holcomb. His father died between 1930-1940. James attended Chicot High School and after completing his education he worked as a mechanic in that town.

After his basic training at Camp Hood, Texas, he assigned to the 168th Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division. He was sent to the European Theater of Operations, arriving in Italy on 12/23/1944. James fought for two months in the Italian region before he was killed in action on 3/5/1945.
