Doris Jean Scharp of Brighton, formerly of Ypsilanti, passed away April 14, 2013 at Caretel Inn in Brighton. She was 88 years old. Born May 1, 1924 in Vincennes, Indiana she was the daughter of Clarence and Amanda (Lincoln) Townsley. Doris married Robert R. Scharp on January 29, 1942. She worked for Autocrat and then for the Ford Motor Company Rawsonville Plant for 15 years. She was a member of the Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church. She enjoyed many hobbies such as crocheting, looking through family pictures, she loved classic movies, bird watching, she loved to fish as well as deer hunt and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Doris is survived by two sons, Robert Scharp Jr. (Susan) of Big Rapids and Edgar L. Scharp (Deborah) of Brighton; her grandchildren Wendy Hawes (Brett), Dan Scharp (Tam), Tom Scharp, Bryan Marek (Dena), Jason Scharp, Joshua Scharp, Amanda Scharp and Joanna Scott-Robinson; great grandchildren Haley, Taylor G., Taylor C., Mitchell, Bradley, River, Eme, Aiden, Addison, Keirsten, Alyssa and Brendon; one sister Leatha Mae "Tiny" Holly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Scharp Sr., her daughter Jacquelyn Scott; four brothers Edgar, Elmer, Orval and Charles Townsley and two sisters Margaret Russell and Joanne Crittenden.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11:00 am at the Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church, 1800 Packard Rd. with interment to follow in Highland Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 1-8 pm at the Nie Family Funeral Home, Carpenter Rd. Chapel, 2400 Carpenter Rd. and on Friday from 10:00am until time of service at the church.
