Larry Brent Petty was born at the very end of the "Great Depression" just prior to the beginning of WWII at East Lake, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama. After finishing Robinson Elementary School and Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, AL, he attended Auburn University and also took professional courses at a business college as well.

The Vietnam War affected his age group so he served two years Naval Air Reserve duty and three years active Naval Air duty. Just prior to his first Naval Air stationing, he married Barbara Jean Aderhold (daughter of Moses Napoleon Aderhold and Eula Christine (Watkins) Aderhold) on November 21, 1965 at Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL. They lived in Marietta, Georgia during his entire active duty assignment. After his honorable discharge in 1968, they returned to Alabama where he worked first for 3M corporation, then he gravitated to the general contracting and construction business and was owner/manager of his own successful company. He continued his education in electronics, computers, real estate sales and general contracting utilizing the G.I. Bill.

Larry loved sports of all types including coaching YMCA basketball, coaching church league softball, swimming and life guarding public pools. In the Navy he played basketball and softball. In later years, he became an avid tennis player and golfer. I was playing golf with him when he got his first "eagle" on the 390 yard, Par 4, 2nd hole at the Stonebridge Country Club Golf Course in Gretna, Jefferson Parish, Louisiana.

Like his father, he was admired and loved by all who knew him. Larry was seven years younger that me, Gresham Farrar, but since we lived next door to each other we were as close as brothers. I miss him immensely.
