In the original entry for this memorial the following paragraph was entered by this contributor regarding the parents of Joseph S. Brewer:

"Son of William Wallace Brewer and his first wife Nancy Ann Seeley Brewer/Gillham (she remarried to Ezekiel Johnson Gillham ;not known where she is buried, however)."

The parent links/notes were made, at that time, in good faith, by this contributor, based on several family group sheets and cemetery listings that seemed to indicate that those were Joseph's parents.

Upon a requested review, however, the sourcing of those links/notes should be considered with some caution.

The lack of a 1840 U.S. Census makes the Brewer family hard to track, and the death of the presumed father, William Wallace Brewer in 1847 means that likely no obituary exists for clarification.

As to the mother, this contributor isn't sure where the maiden name of "Seeley" came from, and any marriage between her and Ezekial Johnson Gillham would have been after the October 1850 census since she and her family are listed but not with Ezekial Johnson Gillham as the new husband. The name "Nancy Ann" came from a family group sheet, and a Jefferson county cemetery listing had her as "Mrs. Brewer" for a previous married surname, but as Nancy Ann Gillham (Mrs. Ezekiel J. Gillham) without a known death date/location. Biographies found for Ezekiel Johnson Gillham only note his first marriage to Nancy Hart Gillham, but no reference to a second marriage. In practice, some marriages are not found in bios and obits of the 1860's, so the lack of a mention doesn't mean that the marriage wasn't valid.

Pending any clarification, will keep the parent note section above on this memorial, and the link to William Wallace Brewer, but with caution.

Joseph was one of several children, not all accounted for with memorials at this time. Some half-siblings (assuming the Gillham marriage of his mother is correct) are buried in Gilmer cemetery in Jefferson county, Iowa. See the link for Ezekiel Johnson Gillham above for that lineage.

Note: The DOB year for Joseph varies with sources - some have it as 1835, some 1834, yet another 1836, yet another as 1833. Will use 1835 per Jefferson county Glasgow cemetery listings, but with that caution. There is a headstone inscription which uses the 1835 DOB year.
--------------

The notice below seemingly indicates death took place in March, 1906; most other sources use Feb. 28, 1906. It may have been that a obituary recap was published in March, leading to a misleading notion that the death took place in March.

This content revised on January 21, 2014 to reflect the actual full text and punctuation used in the original item. A review of the microfilmed image revealed that a comma was inserted in a previous transcription in error, which altered the meaning of that sentence. Additional wording about his Civil War service was also edited in that previous transcription.
